About Mike
Wisconsin native Michael Quick has been writing and performing music for
nearly 30 years in a variety of styles and venues. His performances have taken him throughout
the Midwest to San Diego, where he lived for 8 years while playing the Southwest and up
the West coast. Mike has performed in table-thumping rock and roll bands as well as acoustically.
He currently plays regionally with the electric band "The Mighty Bullfrogs", who have a
CD of their own available. He also works with the 3-man acoustic group, the Billy Krause Trio.
"Down Bullfrog Road" was released in August 2004 as a solo, independently produced
CD with a little help from his friends including: fiddler extraordinaire, Randy Sabien,
Howard "Guitar" Luedtke on lap steel and dobro, and Trey Anastassio Band bassist, Tony Markellis. The disc has
10 original songs and a Mississippi John Hurt tune. It runs a gamut of styles from a 40's ballad
(Chickadee) to a sardonic commentary on the potential return of the 50's womens' bouffant hairstyle
(Big Hair). As a CD, it's not easily categorized except to say it's fun, easy-going music for any age.
As music critic Ann Barsness of the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram put it: "Mike Quick's
first solo album, 'Down Bullfrog Road', is like a patchwork quilt, his gravelly voice the
thread the thread that binds together a pleasing array of colorful lyrics and richly textured
instrumentation."
Kathy Stahl of Wisconsin Public Radio described the project as
a CD she could "listen to over and over again, a work to be proud of." Restauranteur
and musician John Lynch says, "It's fun to listen to because it's not the same
song cut after cut. The songs are distinct and the arrangements are real good."
Quick credits the CD's diverse musical content to "his roots". That is, his parents'
superb vinyl record collection including such albums as "Lester Lanin Does The Big Band Polka", "Mitch
Miller Performs The Hottest Numbers of 1961", and "The Best of Burl Ives".
Whatever blows your hair back, this unique CD by Mike Quick and produced by talented,
New York singer-songwriter Michael Jerling, has something to offer for everyone.
